Medical care for tourists in France

General rule

You must have a proof of insurance. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or, for UK nationals, the UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or any other similar document for other countries entitles you to state-provided medical treatment.

You must pay the full cost of medical appointments and medications. You will later be reimbursed by your health insurance. Keep all proof of payment!

HIV and STIs testing

Testing centers (CeGIDD) provide tests and treatment free of charge. The full list of CeGIDD is available here : enter your town or departement number. Or call us (phone*, livechat or email).

In case of PEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis)

There is no immediate charge for the consultation and laboratory tests in A&E departments, but you will later receive an invoice. If you have been prescribed medication, you will have to pay for it (except for the starter kit of 3-5 days delivered by A&E).

Troubleshooting for PrEP or Antiretroviral treatment

Forgot your treatment or don’t have enough for the duration of you stay? With your prescription and a credit card, no problem, you simply go to a pharmacy.

Without your prescription, you must go to a CeGIDD (testing center) for PrEP or an Infectious Diseases department for PrEP or antiretroviral treatment.

In Paris, you can go to the Infectious Diseases departments at Saint-Louis, Pitié-Salpêtrière and Bichat hospitals without an appointment, and to Tenon hospital with a quick appointment.

Call us to get advice and addresses (phone*, livechat or email).

Starting PrEP

If you stay for more than just a few days and want to start PrEP, go to a CeGIDD (testing center). Before starting PrEP, you will need to undergo tests and it will take a few days to get the results.

Medical appointment and tests are free of charge in a CeGIDD but you will have to pay for the medication in a pharmacy.
